“The Lord Has Answered Our Prayers!”

…screams the subject line of an e-mail I received this morning from TDOY cub reporter Larry Shell. According to TVShowsOnDVD.com, CBS DVD/Paramount will release the long-awaited first season of The Phil Silvers Show (aka You’ll Never Get Rich and Bilko) to DVD July 27th.

As Sergeant Ernie Bilko himself would say: “Glad to see ya!”

According to the press release, this five-disc set (containing all thirty-four episodes from Season 1) will also include the original live pilot, audio commentaries, cast commercials, original openings and a ‘Lucy Show’ episode featuring Phil Silvers. According to TSOD, the commentaries will feature George Kennedy and Allan “Sam the Butcher” Melvin…and the Lucy Show episode is the public domain installment “Lucy and the Efficiency Expert.”

Needless to say, the news of this release is most welcome here at Rancho Yesteryear…and will be pre-ordered as soon as it is made available, you betcha m’life.

In other TV-on-DVD news, TSOD confirms August 3rd as the release date for Hawaii Five-O: Season Nine and August 24th is the street date for the third and final season of The Patty Duke Show (I still need to purchase seasons one and two!). TSOD also has an interesting blurb on the impending Blu-Ray release of the first season of The Twilight Zone; let me just state for the record that I am not repurchasing this series…no way, no how.

I leave you now with a link to the latest Warner Archive release, The Torchy Blane Collection—but that’s mostly for the benefit of Scott C., Glenda Farrell fan and raconteur at World O’Crap.
