What it was, was a birthday

KC over at Classic Movies jogged my memory on this one: today is Andy Griffith’s eighty-fourth natal anniversary. This is one of my favorite photos from the series that made the actor-comedian a household name in the 1960s…and an immortal television icon, come to think of it: The Andy Griffith Show. The cynic in me always whines that life in America’s favorite small town on the boob tube was just a little too good to be true—but the idealist gets nothing but pleasure from watching the show’s reruns; it’s programs like this—along with The Phil Silvers Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, Green Acres, etc.—that has made me such a dedicated sitcom fan.

Oh, and it also serves to remind me how much I miss Griffith in the Mayberry R.F.D. reruns that are currently being spotlighted here on the blog every Monday. (There’s just no end to my shameless self-promotion, is there?)
