Since the blogathons have been coming fast and furious of recent I decided this morning that I would stick my toe in the River ‘Thon and announce that this ‘umble scrap of the blogosphere will kick off its first try at hosting an event…and as might be expected, there’s a story to go behind it.
A handful of people at the Facebook page for the British Phil Silvers Appreciation Society were a little put out by all the tra-la-la and flourish that greeted the centennial birthday celebration of Lucille Ball…when the reception for Mr. Silvers’ 100th natal anniversary was…well, lukewarm would be an understatement. (Not that I didn’t do my part, you understand.) There were some disparaging remarks made about our favorite “crazy redhead,” comments that I think were born more out of frustration at the neglect shown Phil than anything else…and I believe in Lucy’s defense I pointed out that the fact is her voluminous television output is mostly available on DVD while Silvers’ classic sitcom seems to be remembered (why not take the time to sign this petition while we’re on the subject?) by those who…well, still remember black-and-white TV, I suppose.
Anyway, I thought about this a great deal and while I regret not suggesting a Phil Silvers blogathon on his centennial, it won’t be too late to doff our blog caps to another TV sitcom classic. October 3, 2011 will mark the fiftieth birthday of the debut of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and while I’ve already been tapped to do a write-up at ECOF (Edward Copeland on Film…and More for you laymen and laywomen), I decided to go the extra mile and see if this might not be the perfect vehicle for TDOY’s very first blogathon. The Dick Van Dyke Show is my favorite situation comedy of all time, hands down—and so I’m pleased as the proverbial Hawaiian Punch to announce that Thrilling Days of Yesteryear is going to host a ‘thon in honor of this timeless classic.
Now, ostensibly I’d like the entries in the blogathon to be about the actual show: observations, favorite episodes, etc. but because flexibility has always been the by-word here, I’m certainly not going to limit you as to what you’d like to write about. If you want to do a biographical sketch…fine and dandy. If you want to review a film from Dick Van Dyke’s voluminous oeuvre (“Hmm…I don’t think anyone’s ever really addressed the existentialism in Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N…”), have at it. I’d even be up for insights on some of the actor’s other TV ventures, like The New Dick Van Dyke Show or Diagnosis Murder. The only stipulation (and it’s more of a guideline than a rule) is that you tie your contributions in some way (no matter how tortured your logic has to be) to The Dick Van Dyke Show.
So on October 3, 2011 I’ll cobble together a post containing links to all the people who are going to participate…and you can either send those links to me at igsjrotr(at)gmail(dot)com with “DVD Blogathon” in the subject header or you can put your link in the comments section, whichever way you’re most comfortable. I hope most of the TDOY faithful can squeeze this into their busy schedules (I’m kind of competing with my pal Vincent’s Carole-a-thon, so I apologize for that); I’ve already been told by my BBFF (pronounced buh-biff) Stacia that she’s called dibs on the classic DVD outing “The Masterpiece” and that if anyone even entertains the thought of duplicating her choice she will send a plague of frog-eating spiders directly to your domicile. When I get confirmation of the folks planning to participate, I shall amend this post with a list of the potential contributors. “Come join us/Come join us/Just take a part and join us…”
(You can tell I’m pretty pumped about this.) Oh, and I took the time to whip up a few banners for promotional purposes, so you can avail yourselves of whatever you need:

I'll definitely participate! The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of my favourite sitcoms of all--definitely the best sitcom of the Sixties. Anyway, I do regret not making a post on Phil Silvers' centennial, but May was a really bad month for me. I plan to make it up on his 101st birthday. :-)
I haven't seen a single episode of the show so that counts me out, but it will be a good learning opportunity. ;)
Count me in! This was definitely the best, and deserving of a blogathon. I love Phil Silvers, a legacy from my Dad, and wish I could get hold of what is out there on DVD.
Could I have my favorite episode, "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" to do? I have always thought of it as the "Alan's Hair" episode. So many good ones to choose from, but I thought this one spotlighted just everybody, and I always loved it when Carl Reiner would appear as Alan. I don't know if you are trying to have people keep from duplicating, but if you are, that would be my first choice. I'll email you as well, because from hard-won experience with the 1939 blogathon I hosted with Page, email is definitely the way to go!
I'm in! I'm probably going to write about one of the episodes I best remember, "It May Look Like a Walnut." I used to watch the reruns of this show with my parents when I was a kid, and this one actually scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it (I was kind of a wussy kid, to be honest).
Count me among the willing. Hubby and I named our first cats "Buddy and Sally".
Topic: to be determined, perhaps containing "tortured logic".
Several precincts have been heard from!
Mercurie:

Glad to have you aboard, sir -- I am in complete agreement with your statement, btw.
Meredith:
I haven't seen a single episode of the show so that counts me out
I'm really torn by this statement. Part of me is devastated, but the other half is giddy with anticipation knowing that when you do sample the show eventually (knock wood), many delights are in store for you.
"Milkmaid" Becky:
Could I have my favorite episode, "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" to do?
It is yours, Errolette. ("Big Mouth" is also my favorite episode -- the stunned look on Rob's face when Laura confesses what she's done literally brings me to teary-eyed laughter every time.)
Brandie:
I'm probably going to write about one of the episodes I best remember, "It May Look Like a Walnut."
I will never forget the first time I saw that classic episode. Truly twisted television.
And finally, the Caftan Woman herownself:
Hubby and I named our first cats "Buddy and Sally".
I just took a reading on the Cool-o-Meter...you are pegging in the red. (And this from a person not known for feline love.)
Would love to participate.
I can't decide so I'll probably do both (if that's legal), "That's My Boy" and "A Ghost of A. Chantz."
Ivan, I'd love to participate. Unfortunately, I've got strict rules about keeping my blog television-free, with a 1930-1965 timeline, so possibly I could do a movie review. Has anyone snagged Bye Bye Birdie yet?
from The Girl with the White Parasol
Gee, I guess it's not cool to get excited about the cool-o-meter.
I've decided, in that way decisions leap into your head, that I'd like to look at "The Return of Happy Spangler" and "The Return of Edwin Carp".
The dame in the caftan observed:
Gee, I guess it's not cool to get excited about the cool-o-meter.
Maybe I should have phrased that another way -- by naming your cats "Buddy" and "Sally" you have essentially become the yardstick by which I now measure cool. Great choices of episodes, too!
The gal with the parasol accessory asked:
Has anyone snagged Bye Bye Birdie yet?
It's yours! (But seriously, Rach -- a television-free blog? I just pray that sort of thing doesn't catch on elsewhere...)
And his Wild Billness informed us:
I can't decide so I'll probably do both (if that's legal), "That's My Boy" and "A Ghost of A. Chantz."
When in doubt, do both. I'm pretty sure that's written down in the Blogger guidelines.
I don't compete with the experts, Ivan. Much as I love some of the classic TV shows (I'm on an Outer Limits binge right now), I bow to your superior knowledge.
OHBOYTHISISGONNABEGREAT
I'm already grinning like a great big grinning thing at the thought of the episodes that have already been claimed. Walnuts! Spanglers!
Dang, "Buddy" and "Sally" is even cooler than what I'm going to name our next two cats: Herb and Les. I've been out-cooled!
...Again.
Ivan, count me in. The Van Dyke show is one of the best sitcoms ever to grace the tube and I'd love to blog about it - no particular episode, if that's OK.
Having just participated in my first blogathon with the Lucy centenary (for which I may have gone a bit overboard), I was eager to try my hand (of Borgus Weems) at another. (I may even participate in that Fashion in Film blogathon if I'm not too late for that one.)
So - please! Count me as a participant. I'm thinking I'll run through the episode guides to jog my swiss-cheese memory and do a catalog of the theoretical links for the show to other series in the Toobworld universe.
Oh! Maybe a quick piece on my favorite one-shot character as well.
It's not a topic I'm comfortable in tackling, but may I suggest to someone out there a critical study of the show's socially relevant episodes (dealing with race, domestic abuse, etc.)?
Or maybe I'll write about "The Masterpiece"..... LOL (Ducking and covering!)
Rachel turned my head with shameless flattery:
I bow to your superior knowledge
Aw, you sweet thang...and to think Mom and Dad argued that all that TV I watched as a kid would result in nothing.
The Lady Eve (positively the same dame!) is in:
The Van Dyke show is one of the best sitcoms ever to grace the tube and I'd love to blog about it
As the lady says in Poltergeist: "Cross over children...all are welcome...all welcome...go into the Light...there is peace and serenity in the Light..."
And this from "The Man Who Viewed Too Much":
may I suggest to someone out there a critical study of the show's socially relevant episodes (dealing with race, domestic abuse, etc.)
Here's the odd thing: you brought up the domestic abuse episode the time we had you on as a guest expert during one of our "Mayberry Mondays" posts. I saw this episode the other night on Me-TV...and the guest star in that show...is Ken Berry!
(Twilight Zone theme)
I must find out about a Dick Van Dyke episode about domestic abuse! I thought I had seen all of them over the years and likely did see this one, but I don't have any memory of it. Could one of you guys tell me the name of it? And Ken Berry? I would expect him to the the ABUSED, not the abuser!
Count me in. May I write about "My Part-time Wife"? I really want to write about how The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of the few television shows that is not only largely set in an office, but shows the characters actually working.
But I'm not promising to write the usual 8-part 12,000 word essay ...
Becky Blue wrote:

The episode in question is "My Mother Can Beat Up My Father" -- I'm being a little hyperbolic about the spousal abuse angle (it's touched upon lightly, but it's definitely there). Laura takes care of a drunk that's hassling Rob with a judo flip, and Rob wants to learn how to "beat up his wife" from the previously mentioned Mr. Ken Berry.
And the Mythical Monkey made his entrance at a most appropos time:
Count me in. May I write about "My Part-time Wife"?
Mais oui! And interested parties should check out MM's shilling of the blogathon because it's accompanied by an interesting picture that comes full circle on the domestic abuse discussion.
But I'm not promising to write the usual 8-part 12,000 word essay ...
MM, my criticizing you writing a lengthy essay would be akin to W.C. Fields lecturing John Barrymore on the evils of drink.
I am SO EXCITED for this! The Dick Van Dyke Show is also my favorite show ever, so you can imagine how delighted I was to hear of an entire blogathon dedicated to it!
There are so many great episodes that I am having a hard time narrowing it down! I know I'll blog about "Bupkis" from Season 4, and probably another episode or two as well. Those are TBD, as I'm still deciding. I think I'll rewatch some and go from there.
Toby - Yes, I thought about covering the episodes dealing with race but I didn't feel competent enough. I'll leave that to some one more eloquent and learned that I. :) I do hope someone tackles some of those issues, though, because the show really was cutting edge in many ways.
Thanks again. I'm really looking forward to this!
Can a newbie intrude? I'm not sure what my topic will be yet, but definitely count me in!
Ivan, I'd love to participate as well. I wish I would have saved THE COMIC for this (just reviewed it back in January) especially since it was Van Dyke and Reiner together again in arguably the man's most interesting feature film.
Will get back to you later this week with whether I'll pick a Van Dyke feature or a favorite episode.
And maybe something could be organized for Phil Silvers' 101st? :)
Posted your badge on my blog, Ivan. Not sure yet if I'm going to write a post yet. Have some thinking to do.
What is the name of the episode where Mary and her neighbor are alone in the house while Rob is away and they think a burglar is about to break in? Anyone know? That's the one I remember best and would love to write about.
Yvette asked:
What is the name of the episode where Mary and her neighbor are alone in the house while Rob is away and they think a burglar is about to break in? Anyone know?
That's "Long Night's Journey Into Day" -- and the great thing about the Van Dyke show is that with a handful of exceptions most of the episodes are available to watch online at hulu.com...so people who've never seen the show (*cough* Meredith *cough*) can check them out. But even if you can't kick in, Yvette -- many thanks for posting the badge.
Meghan raised her hand:
Can a newbie intrude?
Certainly! Glad to have you aboard!
Audrey pumped her fist in the air:
I am SO EXCITED for this! The Dick Van Dyke Show is also my favorite show ever, so you can imagine how delighted I was to hear of an entire blogathon dedicated to it!
I'm glad you signed on, Aud -- looking forward to reading your posts!
And one last precinct heard from, The Horn Section:
I wish I would have saved THE COMIC for this (just reviewed it back in January) especially since it was Van Dyke and Reiner together again in arguably the man's most interesting feature film.
I wish you had, too -- I remember you telling me how you were looking forward to seeing it again. But hey -- I'm sure what you come up with will be equally superb...and I'll definitely keep the Silvers 101st blogathon in mind for next year...
Just to chime in about availability, Netflix Streaming has 5 seasons. Fortunately, the one I chose is on there. (Actually, I can't remember -- how many seasons were there?)
Ivan:
The Horn Section will review Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie and Richard Deacon in DON'T WORRY, WE'LL THINK OF A TITLE and ask "Why the Hell isn't THIS on DVD yet?"
Ivan: If these two episodes haven't been taken and I don't think they have, I'd like to write about them:
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ALAN BRADY and
A LONG NIGHT'S JOURNEY INTO DAY.
How's that?
Methinks I'll do a general overview of the series in The Land of Whatever, and save the other stuff (movies, other series) for down the road. I'm going to start doing more classic TV pieces in TLOW this fall. I have no favorite episodes, though.
Hi, Ivan! I'm new here. And this is an awesome site! I love the old television shows--way more than anything put out today. I found you through the DVD Blogothon link on Yvette's site (in so many words). I hate to give you another shock, but like another commenter--my blog is normally TV-free. I'm a book blogger. BUT my husband is a real-live DVD fan-boy and when I showed him your post he got all excited on me. He doesn't have a blog of his own, so I have offered him mine for whatever DVD post he'd like to do. He hasn't yet decided on his topic,so could you put "My Reader's Block" down for TBD? I'll put your 'Thon button up on my site ASAP.
Ivan, pencil me in for "My Blonde-Haired Brunette."
hobbyfan sent a telegram:
Methinks I'll do a general overview of the series in The Land of Whatever
Outstanding! I was worried about a potential "Bad Reception in Albany" but glad to hear you've signed on (little episode title joke for the fans in the audience...)
Newcomer Bev commented:

Glad to hear you're on board, Bev -- and thanks for promoting the 'thon!
Finally, a late-breaking bulleting from Rick:
Ivan, pencil me in for "My Blonde-Haired Brunette."
I shall make it so, Number One (great choice, too!)...
Okay, Ivan, three days and 1900 words later, I think I've hammered out my post for the Dick Van Dyke blog-a-thon. October 3rd, right? I'll be ready.
I have to tell you, there probably aren't six shows in television history that could inspire me to work that hard, but the deeper I got into it, the more I realized how well the show actually worked and how unique it was. Thanks for the opportunity.
I used to tell people that I wanted to be Dick Van Dyke when I grow up. How can I resist? Sicne I primairly write about cirme ficiton and crime movies I instantly thoguht of Never a Dull momnet, Someone beat me to that. Nuts. But! I see no one picked the next best thing -- the episode with the longest title in the history of the show which also about crooks and crime:
"The Sound of the Trumpets of Conscience Falls Deafly on a Brain That Holds Its Ears...Or Something Like That"
And that's what I'll be writing about. Thanks for this great tribute to my favorite physical comedian of all time. When I was an actor years ago I stole so much from Dick Van Dyke I should've been thrown in jail for "grand larceny of shtick."
The not-nearly-as-sinister-as-his-blog John spoke up:
I used to tell people that I wanted to be Dick Van Dyke when I grow up. How can I resist?
I can definitely identify with this...I used to practice tripping over our family's ottoman as a kid. Glad you signed up, John -- welcome aboard!
I would like to write about the first season episode "My Blonde-Haired Brunette" but I see that this episode has already been selected by Classic Film and TV Café. Can more than one blogger write about the same episode?

I've talked this over with our distinguished panel of judges and they have informed me there's nothing in the rule book that says "DON'T DO THIS..." So if you want to offer up another perspective, I won't send the TDOY goons after you or anything. (I do have a friend who has some frog-eating spiders in her garage, though...)
That's a relief, Ivan. I already have more goons in my life than I can handle.
Hi, my blog is incredibly new and I'd love to add a piece on the Dick Van Dyke show to plump up my content a bit. I'm admittedly way too yound to have seen Dick Van Dyke when it originally aired, but I was obsessed with it as a 5th grader when they re-ran it on Nick at Nite.
I'd like to reserve the episode "What's in a Middle Name" if at all possible. Thanks!
http://reviewsbycass.blogspot.com
This will be my first blogathon and I look forward to taking part. I will be doing "The Redcoats Are Coming"
I KNEW someone would already have "It May Look like a Walnut" taken.
So I'll do the next best thing and go with "Uhny Uftz", where Rob sees a flying saucer from the window of his office.
I've reviewed a couple od Mr' D's films on The Wife's blog, and I'll link to those as well.
And if you have a Me-TV affiliate in your area they're running the show, as well as the Phil Silvers Show, and a great deal of others.
Half of TeamBartilucci rapped on the podium to quiet everyone down:
So I'll do the next best thing and go with "Uhny Uftz", where Rob sees a flying saucer from the window of his office.
Welcome aboard! "Uhny Uftz" has one of my all-time favorite wisecracks from the series...when Rob tells Buddy he has nothing to fear because he can't get hurt in a dream Buddy fires back: "Does that include guest stars?"
And if you have a Me-TV affiliate in your area they're running the show, as well as the Phil Silvers Show, and a great deal of others.
I have been watching so much Me-TV of late that my BFF (pronounced "biff") The Duchess jokingly refers to it as "Shreve-TV." (Indeed, if it were possible I would marry it.) And because our affiliate is based out of Atlanta, we get two episodes of DVD weeknights because the Atlanta affiliate doesn't carry Me-TV's reruns of Cheers at 9:30pm.
And from the inestimable Mr. Goode:
This will be my first blogathon and I look forward to taking part.
And we're glad to have you!
Include me in, albeit tentatively. I haven't got a subject yet - and I can't watch old episodes on Hulu (damn you US-Canada Border!!) - but it was and remains one of my favourite series ever. The biggest part of tentatively though is whether I can survive the blizzard of mediocrity that promises to be the debut of the new shows this year. Still that should surely make remembering The Dick Van Dyke Show more of a joy (or incite nearly suicidal depression when I realize that things will never be that good again).
It took me awhile, but I think I have something I can contribute to this blogathon: I would like to write about the DVD movie "Cold Turkey," which I will tie to the Season 5 episode "Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy" because Pippa Scott appears in both of them. I had planned to watch the movie for a few weeks now but had to constantly re-schedule it in favor of other movies, so I'm glad to find a greater use for it.
Playing around on my new Playbook and had to check in to see the latest updates from my fellow Petrie Dishers. I'm spending part of my vacation watching the DVD series to gather enough info to compile a chronology for the show. And I plan to add blog posts about my favorite guest star (Lennie Weinrib) - which means I'll be putting the spotlight on "Buddy can you spare a job?", "Sam Pomerantz Scandals" + a third one about Buddy's practical joke - and one about the big picture re: Allan Melvin's contribution to the show.
For my second episode I'd love to do "The Case of the Pillow"
I'm doing a second episode, "The Man from My Uncle" -- and see if I don't! Oh boy oh boy oh boy *rubs hands in glee*
Hello! We don't know each other, but I would love to bash up a post about 'Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy' from Season 5 :)
MadDogGirl has the floor:
Hello! We don't know each other
Well, we do now! Welcome aboard!
but I would love to bash up a post about 'Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy' from Season 5
This is one of my favorite episodes -- in fact, I caught it on Me-TV a couple of weeks ago. And as Rich of Wide Screen World has mentioned, he will reference the outing in his blogathon contribution on my favorite Dick Van Dyke movie, Cold Turkey.
Oh, I'd LOVE to participate! It's been my favorite show ever, since I like 10.
I'll probably just do an overview post about why the show is so completely brilliant!
I love The Dick Van Dyke Show, I like to take part of the blog-a-thon please let me know how it works. I just put the information up at my blog
Cynthia, welcome aboard...great to have you. The Dick Van Dyke Show blogathon will commence on October 3rd, the 50th anniversary of the show's TV premiere--and if you want to participate, all you have to do is have an essay or post ready on that date, then send a link to that post to me either by e-mail at igsjrotr(at)gmail(dot)com or in the comments section of the post I will put up that same day with a list of the people participating and their links.
As to what you want to write about--it's entirely up to you. Many people have called dibs on certain episodes of the show, and while I won't discourage you if you want to take an episode someone's already claimed be forewarned that we will talk about you behind your back when you leave the room. (No, I'm just kidding about that.) You can also write an overview of the series, a piece on one of the show's cast or a movie they appeared in...the sky is the limit. Again, I am enthusiastic about your participation!
Oh, and I must beg forgiveness from Millie because I forgot to thank her for signing on, too. Her banner for her weblog The Stupendously Cool World of Old TV is one of my favorites.
Ack! I knew I should have checked that last comment before pressing "post." That should be "The Stupendously Amazingly Cool World of Old TV."
Is it okay if I change my second entry--"The Case of the Pillow"--to "The Life and Love of Joe Coogan"?
Is it okay if I change my second entry--"The Case of the Pillow"--to "The Life and Love of Joe Coogan"?
Done and done!
Thank you! Sorry to be flip-floppy like that.
Hubby has decided that we'd like to do a general tribute post--mostly with quotes. Will have it all ready to go for tomorrow!
